Alto (contralto) voice type: range, characteristics, and how to know if you are one
The alto — true contraltos are rarer still — is the lowest of the common higher-voice types. Altos have a rich, dark, smoky low end and a distinctive warmth that the higher types cannot reach. This guide covers the typical alto range, its sound, defining singers, and songs to test against.
Typical range
F3 – F5 (about two octaves, with a strong low end)
Most comfortable in the lower-middle; the notes that feel richest are below where a soprano lives.
What it sounds like
- A rich, dark, often smoky lower register that few other voices match.
- Comfort on low notes that feel thin or breathy for sopranos.
- A warm, grounded sound rather than a bright, ringing top.
- Frequently the most distinctive, instantly recognizable timbre.

Songs to try
"Fast Car" (Tracy Chapman)
Lives in a warm, grounded lower-middle that altos own.
"Un-break My Heart" (Toni Braxton)
Rich low notes that altos hit with body where higher voices go thin.
"Video Games" (Lana Del Rey)
A smoky, low, conversational delivery that suits the alto sound.
How to know if this is you
If your low notes feel rich and full while the high belts of pop songs are a real fight, you are likely an alto (or, more rarely, a true contralto). The free Range Finder will show a comfortable zone that sits lower than a soprano or mezzo.

What is the alto vocal range?
Typically about F3 up to F5. True contraltos extend lower still. The defining feature is a rich, comfortable low end rather than a high, bright top.
Is alto the same as contralto?
Closely related. "Alto" is the common term; "contralto" is the rarer, true lowest classical voice. In pop, most people who call themselves altos are comfortable in that lower, warmer range.
Can altos sing high?
Many altos extend up with training, but the high notes will feel like the edge of the voice rather than home. Lean into the rich low and middle that make the alto sound distinctive.
